Step-by-Step: How to Get Your Marriage License

1. Make Sure You’re Eligible

  • Both of you must appear in person together at the Clerk-Recorder’s Office.

  • Bring a valid photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or permanent resident card).

  • You must both be unmarried.

  • If your divorce was finalized within the past 30 days, bring a certified copy of the final judgment.

  • No blood test is required.

  • Minors (even emancipated minors) cannot marry without a court order and parental consent.

2. Complete the Online Application & Make an Appointment

  • Go to the Stanislaus County Clerk-Recorder’s website to complete the application and schedule your appointment.

  • You’ll both need to attend the appointment together.

3. Visit the Clerk-Recorder’s Office

  • Arrive for your appointment and check in at the front desk.

  • Bring your IDs and payment for the license fee:

  • 💵 Public License — $76

  • 💞 Confidential License — $81

  • Payment is accepted by cash, check, or money order only (an ATM is available in the lobby).

4. Get Your Marriage License

  • The Clerk will review your information and issue your license and you’re ready to get married!

  • Your license is valid for 90 days anywhere in California.

  • You can: Take your license and have your VowPop ceremony right after we’re just a few steps away!

5. After the Ceremony

  • Your officiant will sign your license and return it to the Clerk-Recorder’s Office within 10 days.

  • You’ll then need to request a certified copy of your marriage certificate:

  • In person: complete the form at crweb.stancounty.com

  • Online: via www.vitalchek.com (credit/debit accepted, additional fees apply)

  • By mail: send a notarized form and check to P.O. Box 1670, Modesto, CA 95353

  • Certified copies are $17 each.

6. Decide on Name Changes

  • You may choose to keep or change your middle or last name on your marriage license.

  • You cannot change your first name.

  • Once your license is registered, it cannot be amended, so be sure before applying.

7. Choose Your License Type

  • Public License:

  • Requires one witness (two are acceptable).

  • Public record — certified copies can be requested by authorized persons.

  • Confidential License:

  • No witnesses required.

  • Only the couple can request certified copies — it’s not a public record.
